Agh! Busy Friday. My coworkers and I spent the day at a real, bona fide staff retreat yesterday. If any of you have ever worked for a non profit before, you know that every one is usually so busy that it seems selfish to say "Hey! Can we get a little staff appreciation around here?" Well, I guess someone finally stuck their neck out, and our board listened. So we learned about our personality types and such, and identified who in our office has what type, and how to better work with them.
And then today, they went around asking people what they didn't like about their jobs, which actually got me thinking about all the things I love about my job. And I realized anew that I really do love my job. Sure, I'd love to be paid more for what I do, but does anyone ever sit around and think "Gosh, I get paid way too much to do this!"?
This is what my job is like: I work in a very cramped office, which I share with a hilarious woman. I'm usually surrounded by piles of things, like boxes of envelopes and champagne, and while I'd prefer my office be neat and tidy, I did get a laptop this year, which makes me feel special. I like 95 percent of my coworkers. My boss has an intriguing Italian accent. I get to write about dance everyday, and I really love writing. I have a lot of freedom at work to do things at my own pace, but my boss is sure to give me challenging projects to work on so I don't get bored. I get to plan and go to some really kick-ass parties. I have to buy lots of cute dresses to wear to those parties, too. I ask people for lots and lots of money, and because a lot of people love the Ballet, they give it to us! So crazy. And I love our board of directors. I've met so many amazing people while working here. Lastly, whenever I need a break from what I'm doing, I just walk to the library and watch our beautiful dancers rehearse.
So, rather than focus on the things I'd like to change, I think I'll focus on the things about my job I'm grateful for.
