Surprise!

I got back from my conference in New Hampshire last Friday. The trip was tons of fun and I didn't even get lost! In fact, everything went perfectly until Thursday afternoon, starting when I didn't have enough cash to pay the toll, and ending with my flight home being cancelled! I had to stay an extra night in Manchester, but made it back to OKC by noon on Friday.

I had a sweet and much too short visit from my parents that afternoon, then spent most of the weekend resting, unpacking and doing laundry. Now, the main point of this blog post is to relate what happened to me on Tuesday, so I'll just say that I had what I thought was an unexpected and unscheduled visit from Mother nature on Sunday...

Fast forward to Tuesday morning, when I got out of bed and noticed that my abdomen was really tender. I let the dogs outside and then walked back into our bedroom when I suddenly felt like I was going to pass out. I laid on the floor and woke up Bryan and then spent the next ten minutes alternately laying on the floor, dry-heaving or trying to drink some Gatorade. The pain in my abdomen kept getting worse, so Bryan decided that I needed to go to the emergency room.

My first worry was that I might be experiencing a tubal pregnancy, but a quick test in the ER ruled that out. Six hours and every intrusive medical test you can imagine later, the doctor diagnosed me as having a ruptured ovarian cyst.

If I wasn't in so much pain, I would still be laughing about my ER visit, starting from when the nurse asked me if I would consider letting a new EMT student start my IV (he actually said "Well, I guess I'll give this a try" after struggling to find my vein) to the hospital staff forgetting me in an x-ray waiting room to the moment when I found out I was going to have dye injected into my butt for a CT scan. I actually starting laughing and crying at the same time at that point! Eventually, the doctors sent me home with pain meds, antibiotics and strict directions to rest for a few days.

I spent today sleeping, watching movies and drinking ginger ale and I'm feeling a bit better. I can't help but feel a little overwhelmed by this rather unpleasant surprise, but what do you do? Laugh and cry at the same time, probably.
