$200 later, Tino was returned to me, nicely bandaged and heavily drugged. The vet felt that it would be "inhumane" to remove the nail with out giving him some kind of sedative, so when I picked him up, his little head was lolling to the side and he looked high as a kite. I rushed him home so that I could begin to prepare dinner, and for about a half hour, Tino stumbled around pitifully, finally settling into his bed with his head laying on the floor. Later on, we went outside to enjoy the new patio furniture and I set him on my lap. Hilarity ensued:

Wall Eyed Dog
When I got home from work yesterday, I went through my usual routine: let Tino out of his crate, hugs and kisses, and then let him outside. I had a fresh loaf of ciabatta bread on the counter that I'd just bought for our dinner party, and I was thinking how lovely it was outside and what a nice evening it was going to be. I let Tino back in, and he did his usual happy-to-see-me romping around for a bit. I suddenly noticed that there were bright red splotches all over the tile and carpet. I grabbed Tino and examined him, and sure enough, he was the culprit. He had apparently caught his little dewclaw on something and torn it, and it was bleeding profusely. The nail was still very much connected, so I could tell that a trip to the vet was in order.
