My Valentine

I love Valentine’s Day. You all know this about me. It started when, as a little girl, Daddy always showered Mom with romantic presents and then bought miniaturized versions for Jen, Beth and me. He always said he did it because he didn’t want us to “settle for any old port in the storm.”

I remember that later on, during my freshmen year in college, my Valentine’s gift from my then-boyfriend got lost in the mail. I was unreasonably devastated. Luckily, my parents had sent me an early Valentine’s care package so the holiday did not go uncelebrated.

When Bryan and I started dating, he won me over by surprising me with breathtakingly romantic and thoughtful gestures. He was dangerously good at gift giving, and Valentine’s Day presents were no exception.

To our mutual surprise, though, gifts and presents and Valentine’s Day felt less important soon after we got married. I thought that maybe I had matured out of needing so much attention on holidays. I was a grown-up, practical wife who didn’t need all the hoopla.

Things changed, though, after I started experiencing problems with my kidneys several years into our marriage. Because I was frequently in pain, or dealing with a stent in my kidney, romance became something special to be planned and worked for. We developed a tradition of making Valentine’s Day a really distinctive occasion to celebrate our love for each other.

I know many couples in wonderful marriages who say they don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, either because they think it’s silly or because they try to show their spouse love and attention every day. I understand and respect that, but I am simply a proponent of celebrating romance with its very own holiday.

So, in honor of passion and true love and Valentine’s Day 2012, I would like to recognize my husband, my very own knight-in-shining armor, with a list of my favorite things about him:

1. He has a very generous heart
2. He’s a smooth operator in any crisis situation
3. He brings me breakfast in bed
4. He makes me laugh with his goofy sense of humor
5. He tells me I’m sexy

11. He knows exactly how to comfort me when I’m in pain and struggling
12. He tells me I look pretty before I leave the house every morning
13. He tolerates hours of Food Network shows
14. He roots for the underdog
15. He loves God and tries to make decisions that honor Him
